Welcome to Legendary Bootcamp Pittsburgh

Welcome to my new blog, called Legendary Bootcamp Pittsburgh!

This is who I am, what I do, and where I want to go!

I’m Joshua Berthold, the Legendary Trainer!  I am a man who wants to help people lose weight and get re-introduced to working out and creating a healthier lifestyle.  This all began for me many years ago…..I remember exactly what got me into working out.  I always use the phrase, “It’s better than sitting at home on the couch eating bon bons!” That’s because when I was growing up in Pittsburgh as a child that was home schooled I had an awesome algebra tutor named Karen Strom.  Karen was from the deep south….I know she met her husband Rick at Georgia Tech, where he played football.  I remember one day she was talking about going to see a new movie in the theater with Rick and she said, with the deepest southern drawl, ” Rick always has to have his JuJu Fruits and Bon Bons when we go see a movie.”  That sentence stuck with me for 20+ years and so did the beginnings of my fitness infatuation.  You see while his wife Karen was teaching us algebra, Rick Strom, also the back up quarterback for the Steelers at one point, was eager to teach my brother and I how to work out.  We would go up to the local high school and meet him in the gym and go through as much of the workouts as possible with him.  I was standing right behind him one day as he was squatting what must have been 500lbs when he tore his hamstring!  Other than that unfortunate day, I was happy to learn all about this wonderful world of weight lifting and quickly became hooked!  I can remember my mom joining the local Powerhouse gym and signing up with a trainer to lose weight.  I would go with her to the gym and partner up with all of the older guys and do whatever they were doing that day.  Of course I couldn’t do the weight they were…but I sure tried!!

Then I joined the Marine Corps in 1999 after I graduated high school.  Bootcamp was actually pretty easy for me….because I was in shape.  I found it amazing that I could see with such clarity what the purpose of every single drill and exercise was because I wasn’t too clouded by being out of shape.  I quickly discovered that I could be the best Marine possible and achieve the best results possible when I was in the best shape possible.  I made it my own goal to learn everything I could about fitness and working out and to focus on improving my fitness levels and those under me every day.  I used to joke that I had four or five workout partners, because very few people would go to the gym two days in a row with me!   I didn’t know it at the time but now I realize that this discipline of trying to improve my fitness level transferred over to me improving myself in knowledge and growth and made me a better Marine and man.  It afforded me many awesome opportunities including being chosen to train the soldiers of the Republic of Georgia in 2005 and 2006.

When I decided it was time to get out of the Marines I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do after.  Many people talked to me about job opportunities and things they thought I would be good at.  I wasn’t very confident in my abilities to start over in a new job in a new town.  I was confident about one thing though….I knew how to workout and lift weights and I knew how to push others.  That’s when I decided to get certified in Personal Training.  I did a three day course and walked away with a certification!  I quickly sought out gyms in my area and began doing what I knew and loved!  Over the years I found that while I may love working out and helping others, I had to find the right place and the right way to reach others.  I hopped around from one gym and health club to another….until I found Legends of Pittsburgh!  I leaned a lot from the people and this place, and I learned even more about how I could help others.

That’s why I came up with the Legendary Bootcamp Pittsburgh program.  You see I’ve discovered a lot along my journey of life.  I didn’t always know it or see it at the time…but I was always trying to constantly better myself…in every aspect of what I did.  I could lie down on a couch and psychoanalyze many aspects of my life contributing to the person I am today…good and bad.  I could tell you things I’ve seen and done and tell you how they’ve effected me, good and bad.  I could go on for hours about how I was screwed over, mistreated, or misunderstood.   At the end of this couch session, would I be rich, popular, educated, successful, HAPPY, or accomplished???  While I think it’s important to understand why and how we became the people we are today….it doesn’t do anything to help us CHANGE who we can become from this moment forward!  We have all of the power to write our own futures by our own actions.

What does that have to do with Bootcamp?  ALOT!!! You see I learned that while we may have the desire to change who we are and which way we are going we don’t always have the knowledge and confidence to blaze a new path.  We may have a burning desire to lose weight and get in shape, but it’s hard to do…especially alone!  We are humans each and every one of us, and we will falter, but the quicker we can get back on our path and stay away from those old habits that made us who we don’t like, the easier our journey will be!    That is why I started this program!  I wanted this program to do the following to get people on the right path to making a positive change in their life!

I wanted to show people that they don’t have to be intimidated when they walk into a gym full of beautiful and fit people.  They don’t have to feel judged.  We are all after the same goals and the same outcomes…some just started earlier and have progressed farther.  But we all had to START first!

I wanted people to gain the knowledge they needed to assist them on their path.  That’s why I incorporated seminars with our dietitian and chiropractor and various other health professionals.  I think it’s important to understand the why and how and to learn as much about what you are doing as possible because then you can teach others.  Knowledge is power, and it empowers each of us to know why we are doing what we are doing.

I think it’s important to surround yourselves with like minded people.  There is strength in numbers! It important to have a support network of people who can feed off each other, learn from each other, help each other, and push each other when you feel like quitting!  You are not alone on this journey.  You can get help, guidance, and reassurance from people who are going through exactly what you are.

This journey of health and wellness has to be permanent, progressive, and positive!  One of my favorite quotes is from Zig Ziglar, “Motivation is like bathing, you have to do it everyday.”  Think about how long you’ve gone without a shower or bathing? Don’t you feel gross, dirty, stinky, and feel like you look terrible?  The same can apply to your motivation, exercising, and goals.  If you don’t do something every day towards “cleaning yourself up” it’s going to have a negative effect on you!  So make it a part of your life, make sure it’s a positive experience, and continue to make progress towards your goals.

I wish I knew all the answers about life, working out, becoming successful, being healthy, and relationships.  Believe it or not I don’t.  I’m working every day to try and improve my knowledge of all of these!  Here is what I do know…..
You have to commit
You have to take the first step
You have to do something everyday to better yourself
You have to surround yourself with good and like minded people
You have to distance yourself from negative people and experiences
You have to have to try and become as knowledgeable as you can
You cannot get mad at yourself for slipping or falling because you are human
You have to get back on track as quickly as you can
You can see everything more clearly when you don’t have to struggle to breathe
You will never reach an end goal….cause then you will be dead
Those things you think others are saying about you….are typically what you think about yourself
Weight loss is just an awesome by product of focusing on fitness and loving yourself
It’s about the journey and the experiences you have along the way

This is why I wanted to start the Legendary Bootcamp Pittsburgh program…and why I want to share in as many journeys as I can along the way.  I believe that if I can surround myself with more and more people searching for what I’ve been searching for we all can help each other have an awesome and rewarding ride!

I look forward to having you all teach me 🙂
Joshua Berthold
